Italy international Riccardo Calafiori has signed with Arsenal on a long-term contract, transferring from Serie A club Bologna.

The 22-year-old defender showcased his skills during Euro 2024 as part of Italy's squad. He gained prominence last season with Bologna, playing a role in their defence.

Calafiori began his career in Roma's youth academy, spending 12 years there before a loan stint at Genoa in the 2021/22 season.

In August 2022, he moved to Swiss side Basel, where he made 26 league appearances. His strong performances prompted a return to Italy with Bologna in August 2023.

His impressive form helped Bologna secure a fifth-place finish and Champions League qualification for the first time in 60 years. Calafiori was named Serie A Player of the Month in May 2024.

Talking to arsenal.com, Sporting Director Edu expressed his enthusiasm, stating, "It has been a great team effort in completing this transfer and we welcome Riccardo to the family."

"We identified Riccardo as part of our strategy to sign players who fit our profile and will reinforce our squad to compete at the highest level. He is 22 but brings quality and experience. He will quickly grow into being an Arsenal player."

Manager Mikel Arteta added, "He is a great signing and gives us huge strength to reinforce our defence. Riccardo is a big personality and character, with specific skills which will make us stronger as we push to win major trophies."

"He has already shown great development in recent seasons with his performances for both Bologna and Italy."

Calafiori, who will wear the number 33 shirt, has joined his new teammates in Philadelphia for pre-season preparations ahead of the 2024/25 season.

Arsenal's next match is against Liverpool on Wednesday, July 31
