Sligo Rovers catapulted themselves into fourth place with a hard-fought 2-0 win over Galway United at the Showgrounds on Saturday evening.

The Bit O’Red came into this latest instalment of the Connacht derby on the back of a four-game winning streak.

And they managed to extend that run to a fifth game with Wilson Waweru and Luke Pearce both scoring for John Russell’s men.

Sligo Rovers are now ahead of the Tribesmen in the table on 37 points compared to their 34, but they have played a game more than John Caulfield’s side.

At the bottom of the table, Drogheda United breathed new life into their battle for top-flight survival with a 2-0 win over Waterford

Kevin Doherty’s side had failed to win any of their previous ten league outings before Friday, a run that stretched back to May 6 when they beat Dundalk at home.

But after defeating the Lilywhites in the FAI Cup last weekend, the Boynesiders picked the Blues apart at Weavers Park.

Frantz Pierrot opened the scoring for Drogheda, while Adam Foley sealed all three points late on.

And they are now just three points behind relegation rivals Dundalk who drew 1-1 away to Bohemians at Dalymount Park.

The Gypsies took an 18th-minute lead through returning hero Ross Tierney. But Jon Daly’s men restored parity within nine minutes through Daryl Horgan.

Bohs remain in eighth place and are four points clear of the relegation play-off position.

However, they have played two games less than Dundalk.
