Wigan Athletic sign Manchester United forward Joe Hugill on loan
Wigan Athletic have announced the loan signing of Joe Hugill from Manchester United. The 20-year-old forward will stay with the Latics until the end of the 2024/25 season.
Hugill, who spent the latter half of last season with Burton Albion, joins Wigan as their new number nine.
He has had an impressive youth career, starting in the North East with Newcastle United and Sunderland before moving to Manchester United in 2020.
Making a swift impact at United, Hugill was promoted to the U23s at just 16, scoring twice on his debut against Blackburn Rovers.
His prolific scoring continued, netting ten goals in as many starts.
Hugill's first stint in the EFL with Burton Albion saw him score on his debut against Derby County and make 20 appearances.
He recently trained with Manchester United's first team, scoring in a pre-season match against Rangers.
Joe Hugill expressed his excitement about the move, stating, "I am very delighted to be here. It's been a long time coming, but I am over the moon to get it done, and can't wait to get started. To get the number nine shirt is a massive honour, and I will wear it with pride. Hopefully, I can show what I can do with it."
First-Team Manager Shaun Maloney is thrilled with the acquisition, saying, “I am delighted that we’ve managed to sign Joe. He’ll be a great addition to the group, and I am looking forward to working with him. He is a hard-working number nine and has been a natural goal-scorer throughout his time at Manchester United. He has a lot of strong attributes and I am really happy to have him here.”
Hugill's arrival marks Wigan's seventh signing of the summer as they prepare for the upcoming season.
