Burton Albion have secured the signing of Nick Akoto on a three-year contract from American club South Georgia Tormenta.

The 25-year-old defender, originally from Miami, Florida, has played in all 13 USL League One matches this season, primarily as an attacking full-back on the right-hand side.

Akoto began his football journey in England, developing his skills in the youth system at AFC Wimbledon before moving on to non-league football with Maldon & Tiptree and Whyteleafe FC.

He was signed permanently by Tormenta FC in 2023 after an impressive loan spell with their second team in 2022.

Expressing his excitement about joining Burton Albion, Akoto stated, "I feel very happy; it's an exciting time in my journey, and I just can’t wait to get started. For me, it was a no-brainer to come, and I’m just happy that the move was able to happen quickly."

He added, "It’s a very exciting time to be here. There’s a lot of changes, and I’m part of the change, so I’m just happy to get started and I can’t wait for everyone to see what we can do."

Bendik Hareide, speaking on behalf of Burton Albion, said, "We are pleased to welcome Nick to the club. He’s a promising right-back with a solid skill set. His defensive abilities and support in attack will be a valuable addition to our team. We look forward to seeing his contributions this season."
