Galway United are in the hat for the FAI Cup third round draw after their 6-0 win over Longford Town on Friday night.

United dominated the First Division side for the 90 minutes and could well have had more goals with De Town suffering a particularly tough year on the field which sees them bottom of the second tier.

The Tribesmen’s Assistant Manager Ollie Horgan spoke to the media after the game and gave his view on the fixture.

“I thought we played very well. I thought the conditions, the pitch is in great nick. I think the rain probably helped the surface and let the ball move very quickly. I thought we were at the pace of the game today,” Horgan said.

“But yeah, when you're up, you're up. When you're down, you're down. I accept that part of it. But I thought we played very well, you know, but it's difficult. And the other side of it.

“If you're bottom of the First Division and things don't go your way, like the penalty call and that, that's a penalty fair enough but I've been there, and I know exactly how difficult it is.

“But from our point of view, I thought we played very well, and I thought we possibly could have beaten a better side than Longford tonight and that's no disrespect to Longford because I've been there, you know and it goes in cycles. It’s not so long ago that Longford beat Galway in a playoff.”

Aside from the overall game – one of the bright moments was a Galway United prospect getting 30 minutes off the bench with Kyle Fitzgerald performing very well in just his second appearance.

The teenager came on when Galway were 4-0 up and looked very positive every time he was on the ball.

“Kyle is a smashing footballer, you can see that, and he'll play at a high level. And it's great to be able to accommodate it at times like that.

“You know there there'll be a tight game that he will come on in and let's see can he do it, which I think he can, and we think he can but that type of game you know there is probably a safety net for yet to go on show and do your stuff as he did.”

Colm Horgan was also back on the field for his first appearance since March due to injury, the defender playing the entirety of the 90 minutes. Vince Borden also came off the bench to get his first minutes since May with the American having also struggled with injury of late. Also getting game time were new signings Junior Ogedi-Uzokwe and Bobby Burns.

“It’s great to see Colm Horgan back both on and off the pitch. He's a proper young man and delighted for him.

“We're delighted for him to get back on the pitch because he had a serious injury, and he worked his way back probably quicker than maybe others would. But that's the type of them and that's the testimony of them and we need them between now and the end of the season. And well beyond that, please God.”

The draw for round three of the FAI Cup will take place on Tuesday, 23 July at 12:30pm.
