Pike Rovers manager Robbie Williams: 'The ideal thing for the club financially would be to get a big club in the League of Ireland be it Bohs or Waterford or whoever'
Pike Rovers Head Coach Robbie Williams was a pleased man after his side's convincing 3-1 victory over Midleton FC in the FAI Senior Cup Second Round on Saturday afternoon.
The Hoops ran out as comprehensive victors against their Munster Senior League visitors to reach the last sixteen of the tournament in what was their first competitive game of the new season.
“It was a good test for us, we're not going to win the cup unless something mad happens and we get really lucky so we treated today like a preseason game,” said Williams.
“We're only two weeks into preseason but I’m really pleased with the boys. We showed our quality and we worked as hard as we could which is all that I can ask.”
Rovers can now look forward to the prospect of landing a potential glamour tie in the FAI Cup Third Round, being one of just three junior teams left in the competition. The draw will take place in the forthcoming week.
“The ideal thing for the club financially would be to get a big club in the League of Ireland be it Bohs or Waterford or whoever. Anyone like that means that we’ll be financially rewarded and that's what you want,” he said.
In the meantime, the former Limerick FC man will focus his charges attention on the upcoming district league season.
“Our main aim and focus is to do well in the league, that’s our bread and butter but we want to get a squad together that can compete in the Munster and FAI Cups, that’s our ambition and that’s what have to aim for.”
Pike Rovers will find out who they will face in the third round of the FAI Cup when the draw takes place on Tuesday, 23 July at 12:30pm.
