FAI Cup Wrap- Holders out, Shamrock Rovers out, Shelbourne through, Waweru hat trick sees Sligo progress
FAI Cup Roundup
This is an updated version of our original wrap up which can be found here.
Friday
At Weaver’s Park there was a win on Friday night for Drogheda United in the Louth derby with goals from debutant James Bolger and Warren Davis (his third goal against the Lilywhites this season)- incidentally the same outcome at the same venue took place in 2013, a few weeks after Clare last won the All Irelandd hurling title.
Bohs won the Dublin derby with a 1-0 victory over Shamrock Rovers with Patrick O'Connor there for us. Dayle Rooney with the winning penalty. He also scored against a Rovers outfit, this time Sligo, the last time Xander Schauffle won a Major Championship- in May.
Also on Friday night, Athlone Town beat Ringmahon Rangers of Cork as Brian Torre scoring his first goal this season. Kerry beat Cobh Ramblers 2-0 with Cian Brosnan and Ryan Kelliher scoring. That was Kelliher’s 10th goal in his last 7 games.
Galway United hammered Longford Town 6-0 with Junior and Jimmy Keohane grabbing their first goals for the club. More details can be found in Paul Corcoran's match report.
17 year old Treaty United goalkeeper Michael Dike saved two penalties in a shootout as Kilbarrack Utd were defeated after a goalless draw witnessed by Éanna Mackey here, while Waterford overcame an early scare as Luke Rudden scored early for Cockhil Celtic before they scored twice through Gbemi Arubi and Ryan Burke to record a 2-1 victory at the RSC.
In the clash of the Cork based junior outfits, Wilton United got the better of Carrigaline on a 2-1 scoreline- Cian McCarthy netting for the second time in the competition with his teammate Ireolua Olajitan also on target
Saturday
On Saturday, Malik Dijksteel’s solitary strike for Cork City was enough to give the runaway First Division leaders a 1-0 victory over Finn Harps while in the other tie played on Saturday Pike Rovers of Limerick knocked out Midleton of Cork by 3 goals to 1 to make it to the quarter finals- Shane Walsh, Shane Clarke and Dylan Murphy on the scoresheet for Robbie Williams's men.
Sunday
Sunday saw an early start for another Cork outfit as Leeds AFC travelled to Dublin for a midday kickoff against Ballyfermot United. The home side, under recently appointed manager Barry Prenderville, won 3-1 to record the first victory of the day.
UCD were the next team through as they comfortably beat Gorey Rangers 4-0 in their 2pm kick off in the Model County. Goals from Jake Doyle, Ciarán Behan, Sam Norval (his 4th in his last three games after netting 3 in 2 outings for the U20s) and a late Mikey Raggett penalty proving the difference.
At the Carlisle Grounds we had Tommy Healy who reported here as Shelbourne recorded a 1-0 victory over Bray Wanderers. Sean Boyd’s winner separated the sides while Wayside Celtic were swatted aside 3-1 by Wexford FC with Aaron Dobbs netting his third goal in three games.
It was also three goals, this time in one game for Sligo Rovers’ Wilson Waweru whose hat trick saw off Stephen Henderson’s Cobh Wanderers. Incidentally it was only the second time Waweru has played in and won an FAI Cup tie- both occasions being refereed by Eoghan O’Shea.
There were also 3 goals at the Ryan McBride Brandywell Stadium as Stephen Kenny’s St Patrick’s Athletic were defeated 3-0 by the home side- Danny Mullen and Michael Duffy on the scoresheet for Ruaidhrí Higgins’ Candystripes who also missed a penalty.
