Athlone Town boss Brendan Place has confirmed the release of three players, including last season's top scorer Noel McGee.

The Midlanders sit in seventh position in the First Division after 10 games played and believe that they can cope without McGee, Kevin Dunne and Brendan Turley.

McGee finished last year with 12 goals, but has not featured as much this season and Place has now agreed to release the striker along with two others.

"I don't think it's beneficial for me to go into too much detail about any of the departures, but I have been trying to get a fully committed dressing-room, and I feel I have that now," Place told the Westmeath Independent.

"Noel and Kevin couldn't fully commit to the cause, for different reasons, and we feel it's best to part company with both lads. We wish them the very best with whatever path they choose to take in the future.

"I'm very happy with the squad of players we have at the moment. We can't hold onto players who can't fully commit, that's the bottom line.

"I think the squad has moved up a level in terms of professionalism and commitment this season, and we need to keep things right in that respect."
