Drogheda United have announced the signing of defender James Bolger from Swedish club Bodens BK.

Bolger, a former Galway United academy player, spent four seasons at Northwestern University in the United States before transferring to Longwood University, where he started all 15 games for their NCAA Division 1 side.

The 23-year-old made his professional debut with Bodens BK in April, making thirteen appearances for the Swedish team.

Bolger is the fifth player to join Kevin Doherty’s squad this transfer window, following the arrivals of Douglas James-Taylor, Elicha Ahui, Shane Farrell, and Luke Dennison.

Manager Kevin Doherty expressed his enthusiasm about Bolger’s signing: “Before James started training with us, we had watched a lot of his games. He had been playing for the same team as Zishim Bawa. I was really impressed by the games I saw him play in."

Doherty continued, “Since he’s come into training, he’s been brilliant. He hasn’t been able to play for us yet, but in the practice games we’ve had, he’s been outstanding."

"He’s big, strong, quick, very good in the air and on the ball. We’ve been really impressed with him over the last few weeks, he’s settled into the group well and I’m delighted to have him signed now.”
