Bigger effort is needed - Cousins

Longford Town manager Tony Cousins slammed his team’s performance after they were beaten 1-0 by Wexford Youths on Tuesday night.

It was a mistake by keeper Stephen Conlon in the 6th minute that led to the only goal of the game as the Town slumped to their sixth defeat of the season.

According to the Town boss his side went from their best performance of the season against Waterford to arguably their worst.

"You can’t defend that. That was rubbish. We went from our best performance to that. That’s not good enough," Cousins told Extratime.

"I’m now seeing the players that can sustain it and who can’t. I want to get a team that want to be up there and with players who can consistently do it every week, not pick and chose when they want to up their game. It was worse than poor.”

As manager Cousins admitted he won’t shirk his responsibility but said big changes will be made if players’ attitudes don’t improve.

"I am the manager and will take responsibility but I will also make the decisions of who stays and goes from this club," he stated.

"The way it is I want players with desire in this club. I want us to be up in the top half of the table. We had an opportunity that would’ve set us up nicely for Saturday night against Salthill but we let ourselves down. That’s not acceptable."

Longford have failed to put back-to-back victories together this season and Cousins wants to see a level of consistency at the club.

After the disappointing display on Tuesday, he told his players that they now have to prove themselves if they are to stay part of his plans.

"Everyone has played now and going into the second series of games I have a good idea of what team I want," he said.

"The July window is coming up and it’s up to players to work hard. It’s up to me to get it right and I will.

"Last Saturday is an inclination of what I’m looking for. I now have to find the right group of players that can sustain what I’m looking for week in week out. Do they want to be comfortable down in the bottom half or up challenging?

"The thing as a manager for me is that I’m picking the right blend and keep improving the squad. Last Saturday showed where I’m trying to get to."
