Galway United sign former Ireland international Greg Cunningham

Premier Division Galway United have unveiled the signing of defender Greg Cunningham.

Cunningham, 33, grew up on Corribside and lined out for Mervue United as a youth before joining Manchester City as a teenager in 2009.

He went on to play for Blackburn Rovers, Cardiff City, Leicester City, Bristol City, Nottingham Forest and Preston North End.

During his career in the English Football League, he made over 350 appearances.

Cunningham is also a four-time Irish international having lined out for the Boys in Green from 2011 to 2013.

He joins Galway United with the Tribesmen chasing qualification for European football next season.

"It means a lot, being away for so long, it's very pleasing to be back home,” he said.

“I'm going to give it everything I got and I'm looking forward to the challenge ahead"

“I've always given everything every time I'm on the pitch, I think I understand the game quite well. I'll just try to give everything to the club and help share my experience with the boys.

“It's really important to help the younger players as much as I can, trying to improve everyone as you go along.”

He could make his debut against Longford Town on Friday evening in the FAI Cup first-round.
