Southampton have confirmed the permanent signing of Flynn Downes from West Ham United.

Downes, 25, made 37 appearances during his loan spell at St Mary's last season, helping Southampton secure promotion to the Premier League through the Championship play-offs. His impressive performances have now earned him a permanent move back to the south coast.

Manager Russell Martin expressed his enthusiasm about the signing, stating, "We’re thrilled to bring Flynn back. It was a big priority for us this summer, and getting it done early in pre-season is crucial. Flynn was influential both on and off the pitch last season. He’s a brilliant character, aggressive and physical in his play, technically excellent with the ball, and a fantastic athlete."

Martin also highlighted Downes' strong connections with his teammates and fans, adding, "He built really strong relationships with the rest of the players and the staff. The connection he created with the fans was evident throughout last season, so I’m sure everyone’s delighted at the news."

Downes shared his excitement about returning to Southampton, saying, "It feels so good, honestly. Walking in this morning and seeing familiar faces was a real pleasure. The whole club, the people, everything about it is so special. When you connect with genuine people like that, it's hard not to want to be a part of it."

He added, "Now I feel like I can fully settle down here, try to improve, play my best football, and help the team be a success."

Downes will join his teammates for a training camp in Spain next week as they prepare for the upcoming Premier League season.
