Buckley happy to be still 'in the mix'

Sporting Fingal manager Liam Buckley has spoken of his satisfaction with how his side played in their 1-0 win over bottom-of-the-table Bray Wanderers.

Fingal prevailed thanks to a Shane McFaul goal in the 25th minute but could have complemented that goal with at least one more if luck had its way.

"We had miles more play, we had better chances. That said, they hit the bar with a header and it could have been 1-1 but we’re delighted with the result," Buckley told Extratime.

Buckley continued, stating that the win helped them keep pace with league leaders Dundalk.

"I’m delighted with the result. It keeps us in the mix up at the top of the table," he said.

"I thought we played well in the first half, and the second-half we took the foot of the pedal a bit. We let Bray back into it [because we] got a bit sloppy."

Fingal, missing five key players through injury and suspension, had to make use of several players that would not usually grace the first team. Buckley acknowledged that the win was all they wanted from the fixture.

"I think the result was the most important thing bearing in mind the players we’re missing this evening," said Buckley.

Some have said that luck had a part to play in Fingal’s success recently, but Buckley disagrees with that perspective.

"I wouldn’t say we’re lucky. We were up at Sligo at the weekend and I thought we played well," he argued.

"We scored a fantastic goal, we probably had six or seven passes before Ronan [Finn] struck a lovely shot. We had one or two other chances as well.

"Sligo had a few from a distance and Darren [Quigley] pulled off a couple of saves, but all in all there wasn’t a huge amount in the game up in Sligo.

"We got our goal and tonight, if anybody was going to take the match it was going to be us."
