Gareth Southgate has confirmed his decision to step down as England manager following the team's recent Euro 2024 final against Spain in Berlin.

Reflecting on his time in the role, Southgate described managing England as the "honour of my life" and expressed immense pride in his contributions to English football.

In his statement, Southgate shared his gratitude towards his colleagues, notably praising assistant manager Steve Holland as "one of the most talented coaches of his generation."

He also highlighted the support from the backroom staff and the dedication of the players, whom he described as "a credit to their country."

Southgate's journey with the FA began in 2011, and his tenure as England manager has been marked by significant achievements.

Under his leadership, England's national team saw remarkable success in major tournaments, including reaching the finals of the Euros in London and the recent tournament in Berlin.

Southgate's impact on player development and team culture has been profound, with England consistently ranking in the top five in the world for six years.

Reflecting on the future, Southgate expressed confidence in the young talent within the squad and urged continued support for the team.

"The squad we took to Germany is full of exciting young talent, and they can win the trophy we all dream of," he said.

Mark Bullingham, FA Chief Executive, paid tribute to Southgate and Holland, acknowledging their transformative impact on the England men's team.

Bullingham highlighted the team's improved performance in knockout games and their consistent top-five world ranking under Southgate's leadership.

"Gareth has made the impossible job possible and laid strong foundations for future success," Bullingham stated.

The FA has initiated the search for Southgate's successor, aiming to appoint a new manager before the UEFA Nations League campaign kicks off in September. England's next fixture is against the Republic of Ireland in Dublin on 7th September. If a new manager is appointed by then, it will mark the first competitive match for both the incoming England and Irish managers.

Bullingham assured fans that an interim solution is in place if needed and requested patience during the search process.

Southgate concluded his statement with a heartfelt message to England fans, saying, "We have the best fans in the world, and their support has meant the world to me. I'm an England fan and I always will be."
