Wigan Athletic sign experienced defender Will Aimson from Exeter City
Wigan Athletic have announced the signing of 30-year-old defender Will Aimson from Exeter City on a two-year deal.
Aimson, excited about the transfer, stated, "It’s been a long time coming, and I’m buzzing to finally get it over the line. Looking around the place and meeting all the boys and staff, I couldn’t be more excited."
Aimson's career began at Eastleigh before a trial led to a stint with Hull City. Loan spells at Tamworth and Tranmere Rovers preceded a permanent move to Blackpool in 2016. At Blackpool, he contributed to their promotion to League One via the 2016/17 play-offs.
Following his time at Blackpool, Aimson spent a season at Bury, achieving promotion to League One.
Subsequent spells at Plymouth Argyle and Bolton Wanderers led to his transfer to Exeter City in January 2023. At Exeter, he became team captain under former Wigan defender Gary Caldwell, helping the team secure a mid-table finish last season.
During the 2023/24 campaign, Aimson made 43 appearances and contributed to 13 clean sheets, scoring five goals.
Wigan Athletic’s First Team Manager, Shaun Maloney, praised Aimson, saying, “Will is a fantastic addition to our football club. He has great experience in League One and has been a standout performer at Exeter City. I am looking forward to working with Will during pre-season and beyond.”
Aimson joins Wigan Athletic as the club's fourth signing of the summer transfer window, following Michael Olakigbe, Calvin Ramsay, and Dion Rankine.
