Exeter City have secured a loan deal for 20-year-old goalkeeper Joe Whitworth from Premier League outfit Crystal Palace.

Whitworth, who debuted in the Premier League in March, has represented England at under-15, under-16, and under-18 levels, becoming Gary Caldwell's sixth signing of the summer.

Whitworth began his youth career at AFC Wimbledon before joining Crystal Palace in 2016. Rising through the ranks, he became the club’s youngest ever top-flight goalkeeper.

At 18, Whitworth became the first-choice keeper for Palace's under-23 team, making 23 appearances in the Premier League 2.

In the 2023/24 season, he made 33 appearances for the U21s, kept seven clean sheets, and saved two penalties.

His performances earned him the U21s Player of the Season award and a clean sheet in the Premier League International Cup final against PSV.

Exeter City manager Gary Caldwell shared his excitement about the signing.

"With the success of Vil last year, we saw value in loaning another top Premier League goalkeeper. Joe fits that profile perfectly. He was Crystal Palace U21s' Player of the Season and has first-team experience, having started two Premier League games at a young age," Caldwell stated.

Caldwell highlighted Whitworth's abilities: "Joe is exceptional with his feet, aiding our possession-based style. Most importantly, he's a fantastic shot-stopper with a great personality. We hope he can replicate Vil's success from last season."
