Drogheda United have released a statement condemning the post-match incident involving spectators which marred their 4-2 loss to Dundalk at Oriel Park on Friday night.

United have said in their statement that: “All involved in Drogheda United sincerely apologise, especially to the families, but to all who witnessed the post-match altercations in Dundalk last night.

“The events that occurred after the match were unacceptable, and as a club, we condemn this unsavoury and violent behaviour.”

The club are now working with security staff, photographers and TV crews to identify individuals who were involved in the incident and have committed to determining appropriate sanctions once they complete their review.

Their statement geos on to say that: “Rest assured there is no place for this behaviour in our club. The vast majority of our fans are exceptional, unfortunately we have been tainted by a very small minority.

“We will continue to focus on building and bettering a safe sporting environment for all to enjoy.”

It remains to be seen what sanction may be taken by the FAI after last night’s incident. The two Louth clubs are scheduled to face each other again next Friday when they play in the FAI Cup at Weavers Park (kick-off 7.45pm).
