Manchester City sign Japanese Defender Risa Shimizu
Manchester City have secured Japanese international defender Risa Shimizu on a three-year deal from West Ham United. The 28-year-old will stay at City’s Joie Stadium until 2027.
Shimizu, who has 78 caps for Japan, began her career with Tokyo Verdy Beleza before moving to the Women's Super League in 2022. At West Ham, she made 44 appearances.
"First of all, it’ll be a challenge, but one I’m ready for," said Shimizu.
"City play football with a high possession style, which I like. I think I’m technically good and calm with the ball in possession, so I think I’ll play well in City’s style. I can’t wait to get started and hopefully lift the trophy with my new teammates.”
Highlighted Shimizu's benefit to the team, Head Coach Gareth Taylor said, “Risa brings intelligence and technical quality to the team. She’s an established international with huge WSL experience and we are delighted to bring her to our club.”
During her tenure at West Ham, Shimizu appeared in 42 of the 44 Women’s Super League matches and starting 41 times.
Shimizu's international experience is extensive, having earned 78 caps for Japan since her debut in 2017.
She played in the 2020 Tokyo Olympics and the FIFA Women’s World Cup in 2019 and 2023.
