Sunderland have confirmed the signing of Alan Browne, the Republic of Ireland international midfielder, on a three-year contract.

Browne, who recently left Preston North End after being named their Player of the Year for the 2023-24 season, brings a wealth of experience from the EFL Championship to the Stadium of Light.

The 29-year-old midfielder expressed his excitement about joining Sunderland.

"It's a big change for me after being at Preston for such a long time, but it's brilliant to be here," Browne said.

"Sunderland is one of the biggest clubs in England and I can't wait to get started. I captained Preston for some time, so hopefully I can bring those leadership qualities to the Stadium of Light and add to what is a very talented squad."

Browne, who was part of Preston's squad that secured promotion to the Championship in 2015, has made over 400 appearances and scored 46 goals during his decade at Deepdale. He was named captain ahead of the 2020-21 season, reflecting his leadership on and off the pitch.

Born in Cork, Browne has earned 35 caps for Ireland since his debut in 2017 and scored his first competitive goal for his country in 2021 against Serbia. His move to Sunderland marks a new chapter in his career, and he is eager to bring his experience to his new team.

"It’s a good project here," Browne explained.

"They've got a lot of young players and that’s where I can add some value. I've played in this league a long time and have a lot of experience. The size of the club really appealed to me. It's a massive club and one of the biggest in England."

Browne becomes Sunderland’s second signing of the summer, following the acquisition of 34-year-old goalkeeper Simon Moore.

"I'm raring to go," Browne added.

"Hopefully it will be a good start. I think I can bring my talents but also my experience. That's something that this team will need if they want to make that next step because they’ve got all the talent."
