Brighton & Hove Albion have secured the signing of Netherlands international Mats Wieffer from Feyenoord on a contract running until 2029.

The 24-year-old defensive midfielder, who began his professional career at FC Twente in 2018, has accumulated significant experience in Dutch football. Joining in Hune 2020 on a free transfer, Wieffer made over 70 appearances for Excelsior before joining Feyenoord in 2022. At Feyenoord, he featured in 79 games, contributing nine goals and 11 assists.

Wieffer's impressive performances earned him a call-up to the Netherlands national team. He debuted in March 2023 during a EURO 2024 qualifier against Gibraltar and scored his first international goal in a 6-0 win against the same team in November 2023.

Technical director David Weir praised Wieffer's qualities and experience. "We’re delighted to welcome Mats to the club," Weir said. "He has a lot of experience in the Champions League and the Eredivisie and has developed into one of the best deep-lying midfielders in Europe."

Weir also pointed out that Wieffer will join a familiar environment with several Dutch players already at Brighton, including Bart Verbruggen, Jan Paul van Hecke, and Joel Veltman. "I’m sure they will help Mats settle into the club. We’re looking forward to helping his career develop with Brighton," Weir added.
