Wexford FC have announced the departure of five of their senior Women’s squad as manager Hugh Strong clears out his team roster at the halfway point of the season.

Gone are Jessica Lawler, who joined the club from Peamount in 2022 and made 24 senior appearances in her two and a half years at Ferrycarrig Park, along with Mia Lenihan who also joined in 2022 and totalled 16 league and cup appearances, 11 of which came this season.

Abbie Brophy is another to leave the South East club. The former Bohemians winger was a regular in 2023 after a storming season with Bohs in 2022, but she made just three appearances this year and hadn’t pulled on a Wexford shirt since late March. She will be back in action soon, wearing the No.10 shirt for Dublin side DLR Waves for the rest of 2024.

Another to depart the former Youths is Freya de Mange, who had scored twice in the club’s last three matches. But the biggest of the departing names is Emily Corbet who arrived in Wexford having scored 23 league and cup goals with Athlone Town in 2022, as well as being voted that season’s Women’s National League Player of the Year.

Corbet started reasonably well with Wexford, opening her account in only her second game for the club, in a 3-1 win over Sligo Rovers. She ended the season with five goals from 23 appearances and added two more cup goals to her tally this year. However, with Ceola Bergin clearly being Strong’s centre forward of choice, Corbet departs for pastures new.
