Charlton Athletic sign striker Matty Godden from Coventry City
Charlton Athletic have announced the signing of striker Matty Godden from Coventry City. The forward has agreed to a two-year deal, with the club holding an option for an additional year.
Godden netted nine goals in 25 starts for Coventry last season. He previously lifted the Sky Bet League One title with Coventry and was the club’s top scorer in that championship-winning season, earning a place in the 2019/20 PFA League One Team of the Year.
“The gaffer and I both outlined our targets and they lined up; we both want to achieve the same end goal and that’s something that was really important in me coming here,” Godden said.
Manager Nathan Jones expressed his delight at securing Godden’s signature. “Matt’s a fantastic acquisition for the football club. He has proven pedigree and is a proven goalscorer at every level he has played. We’ve chased him all summer and he’s shown a real desire to want to come and sign for the football club, so I’m delighted he’s joining us.”
Godden began his career with Scunthorpe United, making his professional debut in September 2010 in an EFL Cup tie against Manchester United.
He gained first-team experience through loan spells at several clubs before rejoining Ebbsfleet United permanently in May 2014. There, he scored 43 goals in 82 appearances and was named in the 2015/16 National League South Team of the Year.
In 2016, Godden signed for Stevenage, where he scored 21 goals in his debut season and was named Player of the Year.
He later joined Peterborough United, scoring 18 goals in his first season, before moving to Coventry City. At Coventry, he scored 50 goals in 110 starts over five years.
