The Premier Division clash between Dundalk and Shamrock Rovers at Oriel Park was marred by the actions of certain supporters and the FAI have been quick to launch an investigation into the incident.

Dundalk won the game 2-1, but the action was held up for a considerable length of time after some fans threw missiles and caused havoc in reaction to the dismissal of midfielder James Chambers.

"The Football Association of Ireland (FAI) today confirmed that the incident at Oriel Park which disrupted last night's Airtricity League Premier Division fixture between Dundalk and Shamrock Rovers will be reviewed by its stadium and security committee in cooperation with the Gardai and the clubs," read a FAI statement.

"The match was held-up for several minutes after a confrontation between a small number of visiting supporters and Gardai.

"Airtricity League clubs have worked tirelessly in the community to build-up fan-bases which last year delivered combined attendances of 425,000 in a safe and entertaining environment. The FAI will ensure that the behaviour of a tiny minority is not allowed to take away from these efforts."

Meanwhile, Shamrock Rovers have launched their own internal investigation in an effort to identify those involved and ensure that they are no longer permitted to games.

"Shamrock Rovers Football Club condemns the behaviour of the 10 to 15 so called ‘fans’ at last night’s Airtricity League match against Dundalk in Oriel Park, which was attended by over 500 Rovers supporters," read a club statement.

"A full investigation will be carried out by the club, and serious action will be taken against anyone identified as having taken part in the incident. We have requested the video footage of the game from Setanta Sports in order to aid us in this matter.

"These people do not represent Shamrock Rovers, and are not wanted at our club. Since moving to Tallaght, we regularly attract crowds of around 4,000 people, including many families, and these dozen or so individuals do not fit in at Shamrock Rovers."
