Dundalk scoop former Drogheda United loanee Hayden Cann from Lincoln City

Dundalk have stolen a march on local rivals Drogheda United with the capture of centre-half Hayden Cann from Lincoln City.

The 20-year-old spent the first half of the season on loan with the Boynesiders but has opted to link up with John Daly’s Lilywhites on a permanent basis following the expiry of his contract.

He joins new arrivals Scott McGill, Norman Garbett, Bobby Faulkner and Jad Hakiki in the door at Oriel Park as Daly looks to put his stamp on the Louth club.

Cann debuted for the Imps against Mansfield Town in the EFL Trophy in 2020 and had loan spells with Gainsborough Trinity, Lincoln United, and Peterborough Sport before joining Drogs on a six-month deal in January.

The Englishman scored the winning goal as Kevin Doherty's side ran out 1-0 victors in the derby against Dundalk at Weavers Park in May.

“When I got the call about this transfer, I smiled because I played with Drogheda earlier in the season but I can’t wait to get going here at Dundalk,” Cann told the club website.

“I had a few weeks off after my last game for Drogheda against Shamrock Rovers at the end of May and it has helped me.

“I’m feeling really good and I’m in a good frame of mind so I just want to hit the ground running at Oriel Park.

“I know the league so I just need to get to know the lads here a bit more and once I do, I’ll have no problems settling in.

“I’m pretty used to going into different change rooms so now it’s just about building relationships with the lads because the stronger the relationship, the better we’re going to play.”

Cann is set to debut for the Lilywhites in Thursday’s league game against Shamrock Rovers at Tallaght Stadium before facing his former side in back-to-back games.
