John Egan departs Sheffield United as Nottingham Forest line up contract offer
Ireland international John Egan has opted to leave Sheffield United at the end of his contract with Premier League clubs circling for his signature.
Egan spent six years with the Blades and twice helped them to promotion to the Premier League, inheriting the captaincy from Billy Sharp last season.
An injury-ravaged season limited his appearances as United were relegated back to the Championship but he lined out more than 200 times in six years at Bramall Lane.
Egan was previously on the books with Sunderland and Manchester United at youth level before breaking through at senior level with Gillingham Town and Brentford.
He joined the Blades for a club record fee in the summer of 2018 but will be available for free, with Nottingham Forest among his suitors.
31-year-old Egan made his Ireland debut in 2017 and has been a mainstay in defence, notching three goals in his 36 caps to date.
“It’s hard to put into words how special the last six years have been for me, my family and friends,” Egan posted on social media.
“I have nothing but gratitude and respect for everyone that I have come across at this great football club.
“Two promotions to the Premier League, an FA Cup semi-final and a top half finish in the Premier League are just some of the high points that stick out, which we all worked so hard to achieve.
“It was an absolute pleasure to spend every day surrounded by top players but, most importantly, top people. The memories we have made will live with me forever."
Also departing Bramall Lane are Daniel Jebbison and Scotland striker Oli McBurnie, while Ben Osborne has joined Derby County on a free transfer.
