Aston Villa sign Ian Maatsen from Chelsea
Aston Villa have announced the signing of Ian Maatsen from Chelsea. The 22-year-old Dutch left-back becomes Unai Emery's second signing of the summer.
Maatsen, currently with the Netherlands at the European Championship in Germany, enjoyed a successful loan spell with Borussia Dortmund in the second half of last season.
He made 16 appearances in the Bundesliga and seven in the Champions League, scoring in the quarter-final victory over Atletico Madrid.
Reflecting on his move, Maatsen said, "I am excited to join Aston Villa and continue my career in the Premier League. The team has a lot of potential, and I am looking forward to contributing to its success."
The left-sided player joined Chelsea from PSV Eindhoven in 2018 and made his senior debut for the Blues in a 7-1 League Cup win over Grimsby Town in September 2019.
He also had loan spells at Charlton Athletic, Coventry City, and Burnley, where he helped secure the Championship title.
Maatsen returned to Chelsea for the 2023/24 season, making 15 appearances before his loan to Dortmund.
Head Coach Unai Emery expressed his enthusiasm about the new addition, stating, "Ian is a highly-rated player with significant experience at a young age. His versatility and skill will be a great asset to our squad as we aim to build on our successes."
Maatsen's transfer marks the end of his six-year stint with Chelsea.
