Wimbledon have completed the permanent signing of 35-year-old midfielder John-Joe O’Toole.

O’Toole, who impressed during a loan spell at the end of last season, will join the club officially on 1 July following the expiration of his Mansfield Town contract.

O’Toole, known as both a midfielder and defender, made 14 appearances for Wimbledon during his loan spell.

He brings a wealth of experience, having played over 530 senior games. His career highlights include lifting the League Two title with Northampton Town and being named in the PFA Team of the Year twice, once with Northampton and once with Bristol Rovers.

Speaking about his move, O’Toole said, “I’m delighted to sign for a club that’s going in the right direction. I’m pleased to be a part of it. I’m looking forward to getting a full season under my belt. We’ll be giving it everything we have to get promoted.”

Manager Johnnie Jackson praised O’Toole’s versatility and professionalism.

“John-Joe was outstanding when he joined us at the back end of last season. He’s versatile, can play in defence, can play in midfield and has a wealth of experience. His professionalism and the way he trains every day is something our young lads can learn a lot from, and he will have a big role to play both on and off the pitch.”

Craig Cope, Head of Football Operations, added, “We are delighted to welcome John-Joe back to Wimbledon. He has been a key part of the team since his arrival and we are pleased that is going to continue into the new season.”

O’Toole’s extensive career includes spells with Watford, Sheffield United, Colchester, Burton Albion, and Mansfield Town. He will be aiming to achieve further success with Wimbledon after signing a one-year deal at Plough Lane.

Internationally, O’Toole has represented the Republic of Ireland at the U21 level, earning five caps and scoring one goal. He qualifies for the Irish team through his grandparents from County Mayo.
