The Washington Spirit have announced the signing of English defender Esme Morgan from Manchester City.

Morgan has agreed to a four-year contract, keeping her with the club until the end of the 2027 season. She will join the team on 15 July, pending international clearance.

Morgan expressed her excitement about the move: “I wanted to join the Spirit because they have the ambition and tools to be the best team in the NWSL, and trying to achieve that will be a great but enjoyable challenge. On an individual level too, the opportunity to work under Jonatan [Giráldez], one of the world’s best coaches, is really exciting and I look forward to learning from him and pushing myself to become the best player I can be, hopefully helping the team to success.”

Mark Krikorian, President of Soccer Operations and General Manager of the Spirit, shared his enthusiasm: “Esme is an exceptional talent and we’re thrilled to add her to this talented Spirit roster. We expect the success she’s had at the highest level in England to translate well as she joins the most competitive league in women’s soccer.”

Morgan, from Sheffield, began her professional career with Manchester City, debuting at 16 in September 2017.

Apart from a loan spell at Everton in the 2019-20 season, she has spent her entire career at Manchester City, appearing in 64 matches.

Morgan also boasts significant experience with the England women’s national football team. She earned her first senior team call-up in 2020 and made her senior international debut in 2022.

Morgan was part of England’s squad for the 2023 FIFA Women’s World Cup, contributing to their runner-up finish in Australia.
