Dundee United have announced the signing of goalkeeper Dave Richards from Crewe Alexandra. The Welsh shot-stopper joins the club on a two-year contract.

Richards, 30, began his career with Cardiff City, where he had several loan spells and served as an understudy to Scotland’s David Marshall.

He later moved to Bristol City for two seasons before joining Crewe Alexandra. During nearly a decade at Crewe, Richards became a key figure in the dressing room and made 32 appearances in the 2022/23 season.

Last season, Richards ventured into Scottish football with St Johnstone, contributing to their successful campaign to stay in the top flight. Now, he is set to challenge for Dundee United’s number one jersey and bring valuable experience to the squad.

Expressing his excitement, Richards said, "I’m absolutely over the moon to get this over the line. I haven’t heard anything but brilliant things from other players about this football club. The people in Scotland have welcomed me with open arms since my arrival last August - as soon as this opportunity arose I wanted to jump on it straight away!"

Richards added, "I’m looking forward to meeting the boys so we can all work hard and push each other for that number one spot. Good competition breeds good performances and I’m here to drive standards. I want to give everything for this football club and hit the ground running as soon as possible."

Dundee United Manager Jim Goodwin highlighted Richards’ experience, saying, "Dave’s experience in the senior game was something we couldn’t overlook when building a well-balanced playing group ahead of the 2024/25 campaign. He’ll provide stiff competition for the starting spot between the sticks next term, while he will also be another reliable, senior voice for me to lean on in the dressing room."

Richards is Dundee United’s second signing of the summer window following Will Ferry joining the side
