MK Dons have announced the signing of defender Laurence Maguire following the expiration of his contract with Chesterfield.

The 27-year-old centre-back, who spent last season on loan at Crawley Town, becomes the Dons' third summer signing.

Maguire, a product of Chesterfield’s academy, made his first-team debut in 2016 against Wolves U23s in the EFL Trophy.

He spent time on loan at AFC Fylde in 2017, gaining valuable experience in the National League North. Upon returning to Chesterfield, he became a key player, making 167 appearances and scoring nine goals.

Last season, Maguire was loaned to Crawley Town, where he played a crucial role in their promotion to League One, making 39 appearances and scoring three goals.

He also represented England C, the team that represents England at non-league level.

Expressing his excitement about joining MK Dons, Maguire said, "It's been fabulous really, it's something that as soon as I spoke to the manager I wanted to get done as soon as possible. It's been a whirlwind over the last three weeks after the playoff final, but yeah, I'm so delighted to get it done and be at this fantastic football club."

Describing his style of play, Maguire added, "I'm first and foremost a defender, I like to keep clean sheets, but obviously coming into this club I'd like to say I'm a possession-based centre-half. I'm obviously coming from Crawley and it's a very similar style of play so I'm hoping I can fit straight in."

Looking ahead to the new season, Maguire shared his ambitions, "I had a meeting with Mike last week and we had a really positive chat about the way we want to play and the intention of what we want to do this year. There's only one target and that is to get promoted."

MK Dons Head Coach Mike Williamson praised the new signing, stating, "Laurence is a hugely talented defender. As a centre-back, he possesses all the physical qualities you need to succeed at this level. He's also very composed on the ball with a sharp footballing brain. I'm looking forward to seeing what he can do in an MK Dons shirt."

Maguire, who is the brother of Manchester United and England defender Harry Maguire, joins Connor Lemonheigh-Evans and Luke Offord as the latest additions to the MK Dons squad at Stadium MK.
