Rotherham United sign experienced midfielder Liam Kelly
Rotherham United have signed seasoned midfielder Liam Kelly on a two-year deal, marking their seventh signing of the summer. Kelly joins from Coventry City after his contract expired.
Kelly, 34, brings significant experience from the Sky Bet Championship. He has been with Coventry City since 2017, helping them secure promotion to the Championship as League One champions in 2019/20. He has made over 50 appearances in the second tier and served as captain.
Kelly began his career at MK Dons before moving to Kilmarnock, where he made over 100 appearances. His career also includes stints at Bristol City, Oldham Athletic, and Leyton Orient.
Expressing his enthusiasm for joining Rotherham, Kelly said, "The club got in contact, and the manager laid out his ambitions for next season and how he wanted me to play a part. Meeting with the manager and seeing the players they're bringing in, it was a no-brainer. The club have big ambitions to get back into the Championship, and I'm looking forward to next season."
On his influence off the pitch, Kelly added, "I've played in these divisions for a number of years now. I've had great times at Coventry, but I'm looking forward to getting to know the new lads and helping the team get promoted back into the Championship."
Kelly, who has been a captain at every club he's played for, enjoys the leadership role. "I think every club I've been at, I've been captain. It's something I enjoy and take pride in. Hopefully, I can help the players around me and the team both on and off the pitch to have a successful season."
Reflecting on the challenge of League One, Kelly commented, "League One is a difficult league with some big teams coming down from the Championship. Teams are spending money and recruiting good, experienced players. It's going to be tough, but for us, the club have signed well, and the squad is looking stronger. We just need to put in the hard work and make it a good season."
Despite his extensive career, Kelly is excited about this new chapter. "I can't wait to get started. I spent many years at Coventry, and now I'm looking forward to a new chapter, getting back on the pitch, and winning some games."
Finally, Kelly emphasised the importance of fitness. "I always pride myself on being fit and ready. Last season, I didn't play as much as I would have liked, partly due to other players performing well. But I keep myself fit and ready, and I'm really looking forward to playing some football."
When asked if his game has changed, Kelly concluded, "Still the same Liam Kelly."
