First Division round-up: Cork City maintain unbeaten start as UCD stay in touch, while Wexford see off Longford Town
Cork City kept their stranglehold on top spot in the First Division with an impressive 2-0 win away to Finn Harps on Friday night.
The Leesiders are the only remaining unbeaten side in the men’s League of Ireland this season - and they proved to have too much for their Co Donegal opponents.
Sean Murray opened the scoring for City just past the hour mark, while Ireland underage striker Jaden Umeh scored late on to seal the deal.
But UCD remained just seven points behind the leaders after they defeated Treaty United at the Markets Field.
Mikey McCullagh opened the scoring for the Students within just minutes of the game starting.
And Hugh Parker was also on target for Willie O’Connor’s men in the second half as Treaty’s winless run extended into an eighth game.
Meanwhile, Longford Town’s wretched start to the season continued as they lost 2-1 at home to Wexford.
The Red and Black parted ways with former boss Stephen Henderson earlier this month and with Wayne Groves as interim manager, they remain without a victory.
But they can take positives from their second-half display against Wexford.
Mikie Rowe netted a first-half brace for the visitors at Bishopsgate on Saturday night.
And while Luke Wade-Slater halved the deficit for De Town before the hour mark with a fine header, Groves’ side were unable to find a leveller despite piling on the pressure.
