Premier Division round-up: Derry City close gap on leaders Shels as Sligo Rovers and Galway play out draw
Derry City have moved to within three points of league leaders Shelbourne following their 3-1 win over St Patrick's Athletic.
The Candystripes needed a reaction following their 3-1 loss at home to Shamrock Rovers on Friday night.
And they got exactly what they needed against the Saints at the Ryan McBride Brandywell Stadium.
Danny Mullen's 16th minute opener set City on their way before Patrick Hoban doubled their lead just minutes into the second half.
Conor Keeley however netted for Jon Daly's men to reduce the deficit.
But it was in vain as Mullen scored again just two minutes after Keeley's goal to seal the win for Ruaidhri Higgins' side.
And it was a rewarding night for them with Shels and Shamrock Rovers playing out a scoreless draw at Tolka Park.
The Reds had to withstand late pressure from the champions after Shane Farrell was dismissed in the 76th minute.
But boss Damien Duff will be pleased they did as his side snapped a two-game losing streak.
Meanwhile, Galway United played out a scoreless draw with Galway United at the Showgrounds.
The refixed game was played in the North West after it was postponed earlier this month due to inclement weather conditions.
But it failed to spark into life at the second time of asking as the Tribesmen picked up another clean sheet - their sixth of the season.
