England name squad for upcoming game against the Girls in Green
European Champions England have named their squad for the upcoming UEFA EURO 2025 qualifiers against the Republic of Ireland and Sweden.
England boss Sarina Wiegman has named a 23-player squad for the start of their campaign to retain their European crown.
She has named Katie McCabe’s Arsenal team mate Leah Williamson in the squad following her recent absence. There is no place however for Chelsea goalkeeper Millie Bright who misses out with injury.
First up for the Lionesses is a match against World Cup semi-finalists Sweden at Wembley Stadium on Friday 5 April before they travel across the Irish Sea to take on the Girls in Green on Tuesday 9 April (kick-off 7.30pm BST) at the Aviva Stadium.
That will be England’s first away trip to take on an Ireland side since securing a 1-0 win in Dalymount Park in 1987.
Speaking to englandfootball.com Wiegman said: “We know it’s a challenging group, but it’s really exciting. These are all big games that will test us and that’s the kind of fixtures we want to play in. Every opponent we face is a top nation and we know we have to perform at our best to achieve our goals.”
The Republic of Ireland will begin their qualifying quest for the EUROs, set for Switzerland next year, with an away trip to Metz to take on France on Friday, April 5th before returning to Dublin to host England.
Next up Eileen Gleeson’s side will host Sweden at the Aviva Stadium on Friday, May 31st ahead of travelling away to take on the same opponent on Tuesday, June 4th.
Ireland will travel to take on England in Carrow Road on Friday July 12th and with the Aviva Stadium unavailable in July, Ireland will finish their Group qualifiers against France on Tuesday, July 16th in a venue that is yet to be confirmed.
