EURO 2024 Play-off Wrap: Penalty shoot-out wins for Poland and Georgia, along with Ukraine victory over Iceland, complete Euros lineup
On a night of high drama, the final three places at EURO 2024 were filled. Two of the three play-off finals went to penalties while Ukraine came from behind to beat Iceland.
In the early game – the Path C final - Georgia won their shootout 4-2 against Georgia after the match finished scoreless after 120 minutes to earn them their first appearance at a major tournament.
The Willy Sagnol managed team will play in Group F in Germany this summer with Portugal, Turkey and the Czech Republic.
In Cardiff in the Path A final, the teams also couldn’t be separated after an extra 30 minute of play following a scoreless 90.
In the subsequent shoot-out Poland prevailed 5-4 with Daniel James crucial spot-kick saved by Wojciech Szczesny. In the tournament, the Poles will play in Group D with the Netherlands, France and Austria.
Ukraine were seeded to play at home in the Path B final against Iceland but the match took place in Wroclaw due to the Russian invasion of their homeland.
They trailed after a half an hour as Albert Gudundsson grabbed his fourth goal in two games. Viktor Tsygankov equalised before Mykhailo Mudryk got the winner six minutes from time.
The Ukrainians will play in Group E with Belgium, Slovakia and Romania.
