League Preview: Sligo Rovers -v- Drogheda United
SLIGO ROVERS
Sligo Rovers boss John Russell has called on his side to return to winning ways against Drogheda United this evening (kick-off is at 7.45pm).
The Bit O’Red are unbeaten in their last two and with a win against Dundalk and draw versus Shamrock Rovers.
“We come into the game on the back of some good performances,” Russell told his club’s media team. “It’s vital that we take confidence from those games but still keep our focus on improving and raising our levels as the weeks go by.
“This league is so tough and you need to make sure you arrive at each matchday with the right focus and the right mindset to win the game.
“It’s another home game for us and one where our supporters can play a huge part in helping us over the line.
“The atmosphere has been electric so far so we’re hoping for another big night at the Showgrounds.”
Meanwhile, Sligo will be able to call on the services of striker Rein Smit this weekend for the first time.
The Dutch forward officially joined the club yesterday. Rovers will be without defender and long-term absentee John Mahon.
DROGHEDA UNITED
Kevin Doherty’s troops come into this game after a draw against Galway United last week.
But neither team could find a breakthrough and the points were shared as the Boynesiders reacquaint themselves with familiar foes in Sligo this weekend.
Drogs and Sligo faced each other five times in 2023, with Rovers claiming two wins and drawing three times.
In team news ahead of the clash, Kevin Doherty looks set to remain without Adam Foley, who suffered a leg injury that required stitches against Bohemians.
Referee: Eoghan O’Shea.
