Waterford United -v- Finn Harps

Waterford United will look to get back to winning ways in the Airtricity 1st Division on Friday evening as Finn Harps make the long trip to the RSC (Kick off 7.45pm).

Waterford United lost their 6 game unbeaten league run last weekend after a 1-0 defeat to Monaghan United in Gortakeegan. A solitary 5th minute Cathal O’Connor goal was enough to send the Blues home pointless.

Waterford beat Tramore AFC 3-2 in the Munster Senior Cup on Tuesday with Willie John Kiely, David Grincell and George O’Callaghan scoring the goals.

Speaking to Extratime, manager Stephen Henderson was unhappy with his sides performance in Monaghan and the subsequent Cup win.

"Really disappointed with our own performance”, he said. “[We were in] second gear all night. Munster Senior Cup or not. We're looking to get things right and I don't think that was good enough from us tonight," said Henderson.

“With Monaghan we held the ball a lot but we never actually hurt anybody. We're here to try win every game and when we don't win then we are apologetic for it. We can never question the work rate, we worked hard again tonight, it's just at times our choice is letting us down, we tend to be giving the ball away a lot lately.”

“We have our standards and we didn't reach them. We're not a million miles away from it, but when we get there, we'll be a very good side", Henderson said.

Waterford are only missing the injured Kevin Waters’ who remains out with a torn calf muscle.

Finn Harps come into the game on the back of a disappointing 0-0 draw against Athlone Town last weekend. Harps collected just one point against Waterford last season but haven’t won in the RSC in their previous six visits.

Harps are currently 7th in the table with three wins from their opening seven games, but a victory, and other games going in their favour, could see them jump to third place.

“It’s fair to say that Friday’s game in Waterford will be our toughest game of the season to date”, Finn Harps manager James Gallagher said. “It will be especially more so, after their defeat in Monaghan last week. They will want to get re-focused again and get back on track against us. However, we must go down there believing that we will take something from the game. There is no point going all that way if we don’t believe that.”

“We know it will be tough, and we have already spoken about that this week. We have to go there and battle and give everything we have. It the players come off the pitch at the end of the game knowing that have done everything that they could have done, I’ll be very happy”, he said.

Jonathan Minnock and Ciaran Gallgher will miss the trip to the south-east on Friday night. Aaron O’Hagan, who also missed out last week, is available for selection again having come through an ‘A’ team game on Sunday.
