Europa Conference League wrap: Maccabi Tel-Aviv, Fenerbahce and Lille with big away wins in last 16 first legs
Maccabi Tel-Aviv, Fenerbahce and Lille all won big on the road in Thursday’s first legs of their UEFA Europa Conference League last 16 ties.
Eren Zahavi struck twice for Robbie Keane’s Maccabi Tel Aviv side in their 4-1 away win against Olympiacos.
Fenerbahce scored two late goals against Union SG to give them a commanding 3-0 lead to take to Berlin for the second leg.
Lille won 3-0 against Sturm Graz – they have lost only one of their last eight away European games (W4 D3).
Meanwhile Ajax and Aston Villa played out a scoreless draw as did Servette and Viktoria Plzen. The draw ended Plzeň's run of 11 consecutive wins in UEFA competition.
Fiorentina won a seven goal thriller in Budapest where they were playing ‘away’ to Maccabi Haifa – the Israeli side were not able to play at home due to the war in Gaza.
Dinamo Zagreb defeated Greek side PAOK 2-0 at home with Molde beating Club Brugge 2-1.
The second legs take place on Thursday 14 March, with extra-time if the aggregate scores are level after 90 minutes (the away goals rule has been abolished).
The eight winners advance to the draws for the remainder of the competition on Friday 15 March.
