So far, so good for Athlone chief

Brendan Place has declared himself pleased with how Athlone Town have started the 2010 campaign as they prepare for the Midlands derby against Longford Town.

Athlone sit in seventh place in the First Division after seven games played, although it is their defensive record that stands out more than anything as they have conceded just two goals.

On the flip side of that they have only scored three times in the league, but Place is not too worried as it is still early in the season and his team will progress further over the coming weeks.

"I have to say I'm absolutely delighted with the effort of the lads, they're working tremendously hard, and are becoming very difficult to play against," Place told the Westmeath Independent.

"We're beginning to get a reputation around the league as being very resilient and organised, and for having a no-nonsense attitude, while still trying to play football at the right times.

"Though it's still very early days for this team, I'm proud of the way they've organised themselves this season, and I'm delighted with the way we're coming along.

"Our defensive record is excellent at the moment but that can change very quickly if you don't continue doing the right things. I've no real worries about our current lack of goals. We're creating chances and I think it's only a matter of time before we start taking them."
