Deans on a high after latest win

Longford Town defender Chris Deans believes that his side can now push on after ending their four-game losing streak with a 2-1 win against Mervue United last week.

In their previous game against Cork City, Tony Cousins' side played well but came away from Turner’s Cross empty-handed except for some positives taken out of that spirited performance.

Longford built on that display and did enough to edge to victory over Mervue. It wasn’t pretty but a win is a win and as Deans admits the result was the main thing.

"We needed to win. We were coming in on the back of losing four and we had to stop that. We knew that it was going to be sloppy and scrappy. But at the end of the day the result is the main thing," said Deans.

"We’re going into a run of games where we feel we can pick up points, so we needed to start against Mervue.

"We took something out of the Cork game. Although we were beaten, we played well and deserved something out of it. We wanted to take that performance into the Mervue game.

"Although it was a scrappy game we deserved the win. We are a decent side and we have good players. I think things are becoming to come together. You must remember we have 18 new players at this club, we needed time to gel."

Deans opened the scoring on just five minutes after the restart with his third goal of the season. The centre-back appears to have found his goalscoring touch with the First Division club and is now his side's leading goalscorer.

"This is my seventh season in the league and I hadn’t scored a goal before this season. I already have three this season and I actually could’ve had a few more," he said.
