Former Liverpool and Newcastle defender Niall Brookwell joins Cork City
Cork City have announced the signing of former Liverpool and Newcastle United academy player Niall Brookwell ahead of the upcoming League of Ireland season.
The defender had most recently been playing for Workington AFC in the Northern Premier League Premier Division.
“I'm delighted to get it over the line and signed, and now I can't wait to start the season on Friday,” the defender said, speaking to the club’s media team.
“I'm quite a versatile player, I play centre back but can also play right back or in the middle. I'm also an aggressive player, but I love to get on the ball and play as well.
“From speaking to the manager, I know that the goal for the club this year is to win the league. We want to get Cork City back to where it belongs.”
Brookwell came through Liverpool’s academy and captained Newcastle United’s under 21 side, he also had a loan spell with Darlington while contracted at St James’ Park.
The Rebels begin their First Division campaign with a Munster Derby at home against Kerry next Friday night (kick-off 7.45pm).
