Dave Webster joins Drogheda United after impressing on trial
Drogheda United has acquired the services of Bray Wanderers captain Dave Webster after he spent the pre-season as a trialist.
The 33-year-old brings vast experience to the Drogheda team, becoming the second oldest defender in their squad next to Conor Kane, who is 25.
Webster has a rich history in the League of Ireland, having played for Shamrock Rovers, St Pats, Finn Harps, Wexford, and most recently Bray Wanderers, where his career began.
He boasts over 400 League of Ireland appearances. His knack for performing in significant matches was highlighted when he scored his first goal for Shamrock Rovers in a Europa League qualifying tie against Progres Niederkorn.
“Over the years, I’ve been close to signing with the club. I know Kevin (Doherty) and Daire (Doyle) well, so I’m delighted to get the opportunity to come to such a club,” Webster explained.
“I’ve settled in well; it’s an easy group to come into. Being on the older side of the dressing room, I’m there to pass on any of my experience to other players. Any successful team has that good mix of youth and experience.”
Manager Kevin Doherty praised Webster's addition to the team, saying, “Dave is a really experienced player and will add to the experienced cohort we have. He’s been excellent throughout his whole career, and it strengthens us in a couple of positions at the back."
"It’s like every position; you want to have as much competition as possible and keep lads on their toes. We haven’t just signed him for his experience; he’s a really good player, and he fits well.”
