The young midfielder has become the latest League of Ireland youngster to move abroad.

Mullen follows the footsteps of James Abankwah and Festy Ebesele to join a Serie A side in recent years.

Mullen, who progressed through Dundalk’s ranks from Under-15s to the first team, made his senior debut for the Lilywhites in a 5-0 win over Cork City in late September at Oriel Park when he came off the bench.

He followed that up with a substitute appearance in Dundalk’s Louth Derby win over Drogheda United before finishing the season with successive starts entrusted to him by manager, Stephen O’Donnell, in wins over Sligo Rovers and Bohemians.

Speaking about Mullen after his debut, last season, O’Donnell told Dundalk’s website:

“We were delighted to give him (Mullen) some minutes. It wasn’t a token gesture. I said to him before the (Cork City) game to stay tuned in because he wasn’t there to just make up the numbers.

He was there because he deserves it and warranted it.”

Mullen will now link up with Torino’s Under-19 squad but is expected to soon be training with the first team.

His move away is a blow for Dundalk but one that Mullen will do his utmost to make the most of.

Mullen was not the only young League of Ireland player to move abroad today, Darragh Dunne and Jack O’Reilly both joined former Shamrock Rovers player Thomas Stewart’s Ytterhogdals IK.
