Twigg glad to be back scoring
Shamrock Rovers striker Gary Twigg has admitted that he is relieved to have overcome a niggling injury that delayed his start to the new season and is delighted to be back scoring again.
The free-scoring forward made his return to the Airtricity League in last week's derby win over Bohemians, but had to wait until his second game to add his name to the scoresheet when he netted the winner against Drogheda United.
Speaking after the game in Hunky Dorys Park, a visibly jubilant Twigg appeared to be relieved to have gotten back to what he does best for The Hoops.
"When [you're] coming back from injury you try and get a goal as quickly as possible and fortunately I got mine tonight," said Twigg.
"It was a very good performance by the boys, it’s not easy coming up here and to go away with a win, we are delighted.
The striker demonstrated a high level of pace when scoring his injury-time goal as he beat the offside trap and coolly rounded Drogheda keeper Paul Murphy before slotting in.
"I think it’s the first time I’ve shown that good pair of heels, I was surprised that the ball got to me so I just took it and thankfully I put it in the back of the net," he stated.
While there was a fear that the striker could have gone a few games without scoring after such a lengthy lay-off, but the fact he has bagged his first so soon after his recovery is not only a great relief to the Hoops fans but also to the player himself.
"I think as a striker you just want to score as early as you can, if you have been out for a while you want to come back and score as quick as you can. Fortunately I’ve done it in my second game and hopefully this kick starts my season," he said.
"It’s been a disappointing start for myself, it’s been somewhat of a nightmare and after last year I wanted to hit the ground running, but I’m back now and hopefully this kick starts my season and I have a good a run as last year."
