Ajax have confirmed the signing of English midfielder Jordan Henderson, following his recent departure from Saudi Arabian club Al-Ettifaq.

The 81-cap English international agreed to terminate his contract with Al-Ettifaq, making him a free agent before joining the Amsterdam-based club.

Henderson, with a storied career at both Sunderland and Liverpool, has inked a deal with Ajax that extends until June 30, 2026.

Born on June 17, 1990, in Sunderland, England, he brings a wealth of experience to his new team.

Head coach John van 't Schip highlighted the qualities Henderson brings to the squad.

"We wanted an experienced midfielder with leadership qualities... Jordan Henderson is that type of player," he said.

Van 't Schip also emphasised the value Henderson adds both on and off the field:

"His arrival means a huge enhancement for our squad... He’s an English international player and has won the Champions League and many other prizes with Liverpool."

Henderson, who will don the number six jersey at Ajax, had a remarkable legacy at Liverpool.

His tenure with the Reds spanned 12 years, encompassing 492 games and 33 goals, and he served as the team's long-standing captain.

His move to Ajax marks a new chapter in his career, following a brief stint with Al-Ettifaq, where he was reunited with former teammate and manager Steven Gerrard.

The termination of Henderson's contract with Al Ettifaq earlier this week facilitated his move from Saudi Arabia.

During his time at Al Ettifaq, he made 19 appearances.
