Guy delighted with Pat's performance

Ryan Guy emerged from the St. Patrick’s Athletic dressing rooms with a huge smile following his team’s 4-1 Setanta Cup semi-final first leg victory over Sligo Rovers. His side have started the season well and the American was delighted to see the goals shared among his team mates during the victory.

“I’m really happy,” the popular striker told Extratime. “First and foremost for the team performance and to have four different goal scorers I think was really a testament to what we’re about this year.

“Good work defensively as well. I think we were a bit unlucky, a couple of deflections on their goal, and then a decent finish. I was happy to score and I was happy to have four goals scored for us and bring us into a good position for the second leg.”

Despite being almost certain of a final place against either Bohemians or Linfield, Guy remains focused about where St. Pat's priorities lies for the season after a relegation battle last year.

“Our focus is the league first and foremost," Guy said. “But we also have a team goal of winning a cup this year and I think this is our first opportunity to do that so, although we don’t want to lose sight of our league expectations, I think this is definitely a fantastic opportunity for us.”

With new boss Pete Mahon assembling a relatively new squad in the pre-season, Guy believes that the squad has gelled together very quickly and the players have learned how to play with each other quicker than expected.

“There’s a great chemistry between the lads," he said. “I think that’s probably the best part of the team this year and the dynamic. It’s definitely starting, if not already in the first few games, to come together and develop into something special I hope.”

Guy helped himself to a goal in the win and the manner of it brought back good memories, none more so than of visiting ex-St Pat's player Keith Fahey. Guy’s 35-yard wonder goal put the seal on a great night for the Saints.

“I kind of have a flashback, a little bit, from a Keith Fahey goal a couple of years ago", he joked. "If his was a 10 out of 10, then I’d hope mine would be a 7 or an 8 out of 10,” Guy concluded.
