Scarlett Herron re-signs with Shamrock Rovers
The Irish name Muineachán derives from a diminutive plural form of the Irish word muine, meaning "brake,” yet there is seemingly no sign of a deceleration in Monaghan native Scarlett Herron's footballing career as she re-signs with Rovers.
The talented midfielder, who splits her time between Belfield and Tallaght studying Sports and Exercise Management, pocketed the prize for the FAI's Under 19s International Player of the Year in 2023 and banked a number of standout performances as part of their UEFA European Qualifying campaign.
Making her senior WNL debut in 2022 for The Peas, Herron relocated to the heart of the country, making 17 league and Cup appearances in 2022 for Athlone Town F.C., lining out for their 2022 Cup final defeat against Shelbourne at Tallaght Stadium.
Despite carving out a place in the starting eleven with ‘The Town’, an offer to join the country's most successful League of Ireland club at eighteen years of age was too good to turn down.
Shortly thereafter, she travelled up the M3 with the intent of experiencing victory under the floodlights in Dublin 24.
Speaking after committing to a new deal with The Hoops, Herron, who now wears the squad’s number 20 shirt, said: “I am absolutely delighted to be re-signing with Shamrock Rovers for the 2024 season. Since joining Rovers last year, I have been made to feel so welcome by everyone involved in the club."
"I can’t wait for the new season to kick off as I believe this group can continue to improve on the standards we set last year and hopefully have an even more successful season.”
Reflecting on Herron’s contribution in what was essentially a debut season for all involved, Coach Collie O’Neill said: “Scarlett joined the team halfway through last season and immediately made a positive impact. Her hard-working attitude and attacking mindset have been instrumental in improving the team’s performance."
"I am thrilled to have her back on board and look forward to seeing her continue to excel in the upcoming season.”
Nominated for the SSE Airtricity Women’s Premier Division Player of the Year Award at the close of the 2023 season, Herron has the opportunity to shine in the center of the park and book her name in the Rovers record books, as the girls in green and white fight to usurp the Peas from the league's top spot.
