Drogheda United have announced the signing of 21-year-old defender Evan Weir on loan from his new club Walsall.

Weir has signed for the League Two club on an 18-month contract but will remain with the Boynesiders for the first six months of the new League of Ireland season.

The versatile defender has made 56 appearances for the United where he was named Fans Young Player of the Year in 2023.

The re-signing of Weir’s services also indicates the benefit of Drogheda’s new investment and the coinciding affiliation with Walsall helped to deter league rivals from his services.

“Evan had quite a bit of attention this offseason, there were a lot of clubs after him here around the league,” said manager Kevin Doherty. “It’s a massive opportunity for him but it’s great for us as well. I didn’t want to see him playing against us, and he’ll be here in a Drogheda shirt for nearly two-thirds of the season.

“This shows the progress of our club and the link between ourselves and Walsall. The reality is, there were a lot of clubs who were in for Evan and we would have lost him, so this shows the benefits for us,” he said.

Weir also explained how he is looking forward to continuing his spell with the club and the prospects for the club for the season ahead on the back of their new partnership.

“When the offer came through that I was able to stay with Drogheda until the summer, it was a no-brainer. It’s a great club, run by brilliant people, with amazing fans. I loved it. From the moment I stepped foot in the club, to where I am now, I couldn’t have picked a better club to join," said Weir.

“I’m buzzing now that I can stay here until the summer, hit the ground running in pre-season, and give everything I can until the summer.

"Kevin has brought in a lot of quality players and I hope now we can push on. I don’t see why we can’t. Hopefully, it’ll be a nice start to the year, and we can get a few wins under our belt early.”

The signing of Weir adds to the likes of Conor Kane, Jack Keaney, and Andy Quinn who have been signed ahead of the 2024 season.
