Galway United confirm signing of American defender Patrick Hickey

Patrick Hickey has joined Galway United ahead of the 2024 League of Ireland Premier Division season.

The defender joins United after spending the 2023 campaign with Athlone Town – helping the side to a fifth place finish.

“It just felt right, I’m super excited and ready for this next challenge. I do the dirty work to allow teammates to shine and no matter what you’re going to get 100% from me,” Hickey said, speaking to the club’s website.

The American native played college football at Illinois Wesleyan before moving to Europe and signing for CD Herbania in Spain.

Hickey then signed for FC Villanueva before joining Athlone Town in 2022.

He made a big mark during the 2023 season where he made 34 appearances, scoring twice and contributing seven assists throughout the campaign.

The 25 year old is Galway United’s second signing in recent days with Leo Gaxha joining the club from Kerry earlier this week.
