Defensive solidity key for Bermingham
Ian Bermingham insists it is hard work rather than luck that has helped St Patrick’s Athletic only concede twice in their opening seven games of the new Airtricity League season.
The 21-year-old is one of three new arrivals in a new-look defensive line that have helped the Saints make such an impressive start and go five games without leaking a goal.
However, the Inchicore outfit have work to do after seeing two goals in their last two outings break their clean sheet record.
Bermingham thinks that now it is simply a matter of getting back to what they were doing in the opening five games if the Saints are get back to the top of the Premier Division table.
"The defence has come together quite quickly. I’m a little surprised at how quickly we have gelled, but it is great as we have started the season well," said Bermingham.
"Obviously we have brought in some new players, myself included, but it has gone well so far. I know Conor [Kenna] from when I was at UCD and Shane [Guthrie] has slotted in well too. The defence has been solid so far.
"We went down to Wexford for a few days training in pre-season. It was a great idea by Pete [Mahon] to bring us down there so we could get to know each other and work on a few things.
‘Pete worked with us on shape a lot down in Wexford and that has worked out for us as everyone knows where they are supposed to be. Once you have the shape of the team set down, then you can just focus on the basics.
"We’re still not the finished article, there is a lot more to come. It is a close-kint group and I think good things are ahead for us this season."
